Why am I saying this?
Well, I happened more than one time to read rather arrogant opinions of
established designers complaining about the loss of quality in contemporary
typedesign, the flood of clones, the fact that many (espacially small)
design studios rather use some free fonts from the web than expensive
quality material.
I shouldn't give a damn but it made me feel kind of
pissed off. The availability of the technical means for clean design since
the first DTP machine was affordable, thus the increasing number of people
calling themselves designers because they knew how to handle a mouse (with
the result of popular design catastrophes) is a fact designers just have
to live with.
On the other hand, unprofessional designers have good ideas
also. And there's more than one really cool free font on the web. Compare
it to the impact of Punk and New Wave on mainstream music at the end of
the seventies.
I'd like professional
designers to have a little more respect for their undergound "colleagues".
They might not have diploma, but that doesn't mean they're completely
incompetent or generally no hard-working fellows. So if you might want
to tell me something about how shitty my stuff is, save your energy if
it's not constructive criticism.
Peace!
